TikTok Ads for e-commerce brands: how to get started
TikTok advertising pays off for an online store when your product can be shown visually in a few seconds and you can supply fresh, platform-native content every week. On TikTok, your creative is your targeting: the algorithm distributes ads based on engagement signals, not on the audiences you pick.
What is TikTok advertising?
TikTok Ads are paid placements in the TikTok feed. The main formats are In-Feed videos, Spark Ads (boosted organic posts from your brand or a creator) and catalogue ads. TikTok is a discovery platform: people aren't searching for your product, they stumble onto it.
Is TikTok right for your store?
- Your product can be demonstrated visually (before/after, unboxing, everyday use).
- Your customers are active on TikTok in your markets. Check the potential reach in TikTok Ads Manager for each market. In Denmark, for example, TikTok had 1.49 million users aged 18+ in late 2025, an ad reach of 30.6% of adults (DataReportal, Digital 2026: Denmark).
- You can produce or source 3-5 new videos a week.
- Your tracking (pixel and Events API) is in place, so you can measure purchases.
Getting started in 5 steps
Set up measurement before you spend
Install the TikTok Pixel and server-side events, and reconcile against your store's own order data.
Make content for TikTok, not Meta ads in a new frame
Most brands upload their Meta ads to TikTok and expect the same results. A weak hook gets you dropped from distribution within the first three seconds.
Work with creators and Spark Ads
Creator content feels native. TikTok's own internal tests show Spark Ads average a 134% higher completion rate than standard In-Feed ads (TikTok for Business). That's a platform average, not a guarantee, so test it in your own account.
Go broad and let the creative do the targeting
Use broad targeting and test many hooks rather than many audiences. TikTok recommends 3-5 different creatives per ad group (TikTok Ads Help Center).
Measure the whole business
Don't judge TikTok on attributed ROAS alone. Track branded search, blended MER and new customers.
What does TikTok advertising cost?
You pay for impressions or clicks in an auction. TikTok requires daily budgets above USD 50 per campaign and above USD 20 per ad group (TikTok Ads Manager: About Budget). Your budget also has to cover a steady flow of new content.
Common mistakes
- Reusing Meta creatives without adapting them
- Too few new videos, so ads fatigue fast
- Judging the channel too early and on last-click only

Can TikTok ads work for a small online store?
Yes, if the product is visual and you can keep content coming. Start with a test budget and clear success metrics.
Should I choose TikTok or Meta?
For most stores Meta is the foundation and TikTok is an extra channel for new customers. Test TikTok once Meta is running steadily.
How many videos do I need?
TikTok recommends 3-5 different creatives per ad group, and adding new ones when results start to decline (TikTok Ads Help Center).
What are Spark Ads?
Ads that run on an existing organic post, for example from a creator, keeping its likes and comments.
What is the minimum budget on TikTok?
According to TikTok, daily budgets must exceed USD 50 per campaign and USD 20 per ad group.
